There are command line tools for monitoring SMART data (which is data that the hd reports about it's own health). If failure should occur each time in different blocks it would put the hard drive out of the scope. SMART capabilities: (0x0003) Saves SMART data before entering power-saving mode. The OS becomes unusable only when I synchronize primary disk w/ external HDD. General Purpose Logging supported. Moreover, it also happens apparently randomly even when writing small files on the disk periodically (I have a script that writes 512B every 30 seconds)... If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.
