So, I took another CD-R from the old series, and made another live-CD burn with EXACTLY the same hardware, software and settings, and the result was: a CD with errors! Put the ISO on another USB stick, and the problem no longer occurred. I just wouldn't keep anything critical on the drive. I wonder if the 16Gb is too big for the bootable image. Check This Out
