In this case, the default entry # is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'. I am using a solution from somewhere else that told me to first re-install Ubuntu so that the grub loader is installed then you can get back into windows and remove Added DELCMOS to the DOSAPPS directory. First I did grub-install /dev/sda1.
Updated SPFDISK to 2000-03r. So if my computer is using the notation "hd0" for this sort of thing, I would type mkdir hd0 ? So... type bootsect /nt60 ALL /mbrthis was the only command that ended up writing over GRUB while allowing the windows loader to remain intact with both partitions.
